Marlene says: Moving is not for Sissies

November 28, 2010

Travel is exciting because you are experiencing new places and don’t feel bound by time or space.  You are free floating in the world and it is glorious.  Moving to a new place offers us a whole new experience except that instead of feeling above it all, you are very much grounded, trying to figure it all out.

What started as a good idea (i.e. moving) morphs into why am I doing this?  Once the romance of the decision is over, the nitty-gritty of the move takes over.  Everybody feels stressed when moving but if you have a disability, I think the feeling gets magnified.  How will I get around, meet new people, find new doctors – how will I navigate this new world?  Suddenly reality rushes in and knocks you over. I might not like where I am now but how will the new place be – what services are available to me?

I once saw myself as brave but moving has been a reality check for me.  I was once strong and could do it myself. Not anymore, moving is complicated and fraught with obstacles.  You are no longer the mover but one who has to be moved.  Active has become passive until you realize that shaking up your complacency is always a good thing.

Moving to Asheville

November 9, 2010

Marlene and I are busy packing, so you might not hear from us for a while.

On November 16 we’ll be moving from our home in central New Jersey to Asheville, NC.  Asheville is a small city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  It’s beautiful, with a great climate, great eats, and a thriving artist’s community.

We’ve been in New Jersey for about 20 years.  We’ll will miss a lot of people, but we know it’s possible to stay in touch.

We’re now looking forward to meeting new people and exploring a different part of the country.

Wish us luck!  We’ll be in touch as soon as we can.
