How to Improve Travel in Your Community

June 26, 2011

Rewarding travel experiences need not take place in exotic locales.  They can be found everywhere. That’s why one of the goals we have at www.i-can-travel.com is helping people with disabilities travel readily in their own communities and participate fully in all the good things life has to offer close at hand.

Recently, I’ve been considering ways to make available information that could be used to help us make our communities more accessible.  Just this week a friend told me about a wonderful site www.IndianaDisabilityAwareness.org, which I would recommend to anyone interested in grass roots change.

The site provides information and sample materials targeting everyone from schoolchildren to young adults, religious congregations, media, local business and legislative advocacy.   Among the specific materials are:

  • Children’s booklist, coloring books
  • ADA checklist
  • Legislative booklet
  • Recognition certificate
  • Guidelines for reporting/writing
  • Print and radio PSAs
  • Posters

What’s still needed, though, is a “How To” that will mobilize our communities to take advantage of these ideas by implementing them where we live.  Is there a local committee of volunteers to look at the opportunities available to us to make our communities more accessible, or a way to make the economic argument that our communities will actually benefit from cultivating an attitude of inclusion in its planning processes?

What experiences have you had in your community?  How can it be made more welcoming to people with disabilities?  Please share your responses with us!
