Marlene and I have come up with some criteria that will help you compare potential destination sites. When using this quick checklist, consider the factors most relevant to your situation and grade accordingly.

Environmental Criteria – 20%

  • Disability can impact vacation selection (e.g. MS sufferers staying away from heat)
  • Distances between attractions or ability to reach (and to get from one to another)

Accessibility Criteria – 40%

In air

  • Aisles
  • Bathroom
  • Seating
  • Assistance
  • Storage of chair
  • Oxygen charge

In transit

  • Scooter
  • Wheelchair
  • Walkers
  • Aide
  • Ramps

At location

  • Ramps
  • Curb cuts
  • Street quality
    • Cobblestone
    • Narrow/broad
    • Distances
    • Public transportation

Accommodations

  • Bathrooms
    • Grab rails
    • Commodes
    • Shower stalls
    • Bath lifts
    • Bed’s height
    • Sufficient room to turn wheelchair
    • Wide doors
    • Ramps as needed
    • TV, alarm and telephone equipment for hearing / sight-impaired
    • Electrical outlets – will I need an adapter?

Activities criteria – 40%

  • Able to enjoy key activities of location (e.g. wheelchair passengers on cruise)
  • Accessibility of dining
  • Ruins & Ancient cities (e.g. Old City of Jerusalem)
  • Safaris (for blind)
  • Tours (for hearing impaired )
